The University of Vermont began a green initiative in 2002 when the school started its own carbon emissions. Doing so has helped them efficiently and effectively lower their emissions. UVM promotes public transportation by providing monetary incentives to its students and faculty as well. Recently the school passed a mandate that all new buildings must be LEED-certified, and even started transforming existing buildings like their student center to meet these qualifications. Additionally, UVM purchases 30 percent of its food from Vermont-based companies, offers compostable to-go containers in dining halls, and turns leftover kitchen grease into biodiesel fuel.
